The Roll of Amino Acids in Weight Loss

Amino acids are the core of all cells in the human body. Therefore, intake of amino acids during weight loss insures the maintenance of muscle mass while losing fat. Overall, amino acids perform two tasks: synthesis of proteins and various biomolecules and the oxidization of urea and carbon dioxide. There are eight essential amino acids which the body cannot create on its own, so they must come fully from food sources. Without these amino acids, any weight loss efforts would be hindered.

These amino acids are:

  • L-tyrosine and L-Phenylalannine: these works together to create active amines like epinephrine, dopamine and norepinephrine. These amines cause reactions in the brain to aid weight loss
  • Epinephrine reduces the desire to eat
  • L-Phenylalanine regulates the brain's ability to recognize hunger or fullness. It also gives the body a desire to remain at the appropriate weight once it is attained.
  • L-Carnitine naturally suppresses weight. It works differently than the others by transferring fat to be metabolized into energy rather than storing it
  • L-tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin which alerts the body to fullness

Amino Acids are very helpful for weight loss, but before taking supplements for amino acids, it is important to test current levels of amino acids in your body. This will let you know what amino acids you are low or high on during the day. Some amino acid supplements combined with a nutritious diet can jump start weight loss. Amino acid supplements are extremely beneficial, but can also be temperamental. If taken in absence of certain foods or without specific foods, the results may not be optimum. Maintaining proper diet and nutrition are at the core of using amino acids for weight loss. A diet with 30% protein has enough amino acids. Animal proteins have the richest sources of essential amino acids, but also a lot of fat so watch how much fat intake you have.
