Where can I find Magnesium in my diet?

It’s generally found in green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds, and legumes. In the green leafy vegetables, spinach takes the cake for being the best source of magnesium. Swiss chard and beet greens follow closely behind. Pumpkin seeds, turnip greens and summer squash are all also great sources of magnesium.

What does Magnesium do?

Magnesium is key in maintain bone integrity. Studies show that ongoing mild deficiency of magnesium can lead to significant amounts of bone loss in the body. Magnesium is also linked to energy production. Many of the chemical reactions required in energy production require magnesium as a co-factor for the enzymes to function properly. Enzymes are proteins that allow for fast chemical reactions and co-factors are nutrients that are required for enzymes for their function. Magnesium is also very important in maintaining the balance of the nervous system. Receptors, like NMDA, require magnesium to function normally. Low magnesium in the diet is linked to increased risk of depression and this has to do with receptors like NMDA. Magnesium also controls inflammation and blood sugar.
